#1 Salon products are identical to drugstore products
False. Salon products are created with higher quality, more expensive ingredients that are designed to provide consistent results to maintain healthy hair. The quality ingredients used in salon products are not usually found in drugstore brands. Many drugstore brands use waxes and other fillers which can damage your hair over time.
#2 Hair develops an immunity to products over time
False. Some people regularly change their hair care products because they believe that their hair develops product immunity after prolonged use. The products are actually building-up on your hair. By using a clarifying shampo a couple times a month your hair will be clean and healthy, and your faithful products will be working great again.
#3 Cutting your hair will make it grow faster/thicker
False. It’s hair, not grass. You have a different type of hair on your head than on your face. Cutting the hair on your head only makes it shorter. Although shorter hair can sometimes look and feel thicker, cutting your hair won’t change its biologically established growth rate or overall texture. Unless you are Cousin It or Cher hair grows an average of half an inch per month no matter what you do or take.
#4 Split ends can be repaired
False. The only remedy for getting rid of split ends is to cut them off. There are products that will provide a temporary fix, but it will only last until your next shampoo. The good news is that these products can also prevent split ends from forming. If your hair does have split ends, make an appointment to have it trimmed ASAP and get yourself a split end mender to use as a preventative. If you choose to clip your own split ends at home always use a professional set of scissors and avoid dull blades, which can make splits worse.
#5 Split ends will travel
True. Uncut split ends can travel up the hair shaft towards the roots. Some ends can actually split multiple times so that your split ends have splits. Make an appointment with your stylist pronto to have split ends trimmed to keep your hair healthy.
#6 Dandruff is caused by dry scalp
False. Dandruff and dry scalp are two entirely different things. A good shampoo and conditioner will take care of dry scalp, or ‘flaking’. Dandruff shampoos are unnecessary and inadvisable for dry scalp. Dandruff is a serious health issue and may require a prescribed medication from a doctor. Few people have real dandruff. Dandruff is caused by overactive microorganisms found in your hair follicle. Dandruff scales are waxy or oily; whereas dry scalp looks like dry flakes. If you use a dandruff product on dry scalp the condition will worsen; not improve.
#7 Swimming can turn hair green
True. Frequent swimmers with blonde hair (natural or bottle) can develop a green tint. Greenish tinged hair can be avoided with leave-in conditioners and special products that will provide a barrier to chlorine and related chemicals. If you already have green hair, a chelating shampoo will clarify your hair and restore your blonde to its original luster.
#8 washing your hair everyday will dry it out
False. If your hair is dry after you wash it you may be using the wrong shampoo. The right shampoo for your hair will add moisture, body, and beauty. The key is finding the right one for you. However, just because it’s ok to wash your hair everyday doesn’t mean you need to.
#9 Rinse out conditioners do not provide any benefits
False. Conditioners will deposit proteins and moisture on the hair shaft leaving your hair feeling softer and looking shinier.
#10 your hair will always have the same texture
False. If you were born with straight, curly, or wavy tresses, there are many things that could change your hair’s texture. Pregnancy, medication, chemotherapy, age and many other variables can alter your hair’s texture temporarily or permanently.
#11 Hair needs sunscreen
True. Just like skin your hair needs protection from the sun, especially if you color it. But don’t use face or body sunscreen in your hair. Grab a leave-in conditioner or cream to spray on your locks; some even come with chlorine blockers to keep your hair safe from turning green.
#12 Brushing your hair is good for it
False. Brushing your hair is the leading contributor of split ends and hair breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush when your hair is wet. Denman and Mason Pearson brands make fantastic detangling brushes. Comb or brush gently from ends to root until your hair is detangled. Brushing your hair when dry stimulates the hair follicles to produce more oil. It is important to use a brush of good quality. Strike a happy medium between yanking a brush through your hair and stroking it hundreds of times. Once your hair is in place STOP.
#13 Lemon juice will safely lighten hair
False. Lemon juice will lighten hair, but it’s drying and damaging. In addition, you will have no control over how much or how little the hair lightens, so you could wind up with uneven color. If you have dry, damaged, or overprocessed hair invest in a protein reconstructor or deep conditioner to use once a week.
#14 Home cocktails with vodka, mayonnaise, or beer are great for your hair
False. There may be some ingredient in those concoctions that are great for your hair, but today’s products use the best of those ingredients without the smell, funny texture, or hassle. Save the mayonnaise for your sandwich and put something else in your hair. Grab a protein pack or deep conditioner from your local supply, they run between $2 and $4 for 2 treatments.
#15 If you pull one gray hair two will grow in its place
False. If this were true I would be snatching my hair out by the fist-full. I need more hair and I can always color the gray hair.
